Eastern Europe Road Trip: Night Visit to Eger

Welcome to the beginning of our Eastern Europe road trip adventure! Buckle up as we take you on a journey from the picturesque streets of Mostar to the vibrant cityscape of Warsaw, Poland. In this first post, we’re excited to share our fleeting but memorable stop in the charming town of Eger, Hungary. As the wheels of our trusty vehicle rolled out of Mostar, we embarked on a quest to see the diverse landscapes and cultures that Eastern Europe has to offer. Our furthest destination? Warsaw, Poland – a city rich in history and culture. That city was the reason of our road trip. But as it is the case with all road trips: it’s about the journey not the destination. So let’s start at the beginning.

Our first pitstop, however, brought us to the captivating town of Eger, Hungary. Nestled in the northeastern part of the country, Eger greeted us with its medieval charm and fascinating history. Despite spending only one evening in this enchanting place, we were instantly captivated by its beauty. As we would find out later, most of rural Hungary is actualy beaten down a bit, yet this town greeted us with beauty and charm.

Eger’s history dates back centuries, with tales of conquests, battles, and resilience echoing through its cobblestone streets. One cannot explore Eger without encountering its most famous historical event – the Siege of Eger in 1552. Against all odds, the defenders of Eger repelled the mighty Ottoman army, earning the town a place in Hungarian folklore and history books alike.

Our evening in Eger was a whirlwind of exploration and discovery. From wandering through the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town to marveling at the grandeur of Eger Castle, every corner seemed to unveil a piece of the town’s storied past. We had some really great burgers in a local place.

Our time in Eger may have been brief, but it left an mark, not only for this first night in Eastern Europe, but also for the rest of the journey. We went to our apartment and had a good nights sleep. We needed it after 9 hours of driving from Mostar. The next morning was very relaxed and from there on we started our journey through the highways and byways of this part of the continent.

Join us as we continue our Eastern European odyssey, from the historic streets of Eger to the bustling metropolises of Central Europe. Stay tuned for more tales of exploration, discovery, and unforgettable experiences as we make our way towards Warsaw, our biggest destination in this epic road trip across Eastern Europe.
